On the occasion of the International Scientific Conference "Living Landscape - The European Landscape Convention in research perspective", UNISCAPE organised a Master Class in Landscape Research, to discuss and deepen the major results of the debate in the Conference.

The Master Class was held at the European University Institute of Florence (in Badia Fiesolana) on the 21-23 October 2010.

The Master Class is addressed to PhD students, researchers and students interested in landscape and willing to discuss and deepen their knowledge by comparing it with other approaches. It will develop the following themes: landscape identification and typology, participation, perception, and effects of policy development on landscape. These topics will be analysed with reference to the European Landscape Convention and in particular to urban, rural and periurban landscapes.

Professor Mauro Agnoletti (University of Florence, Department of Environmental Science and Technology) was the scientific coordinator. The panel of invited lecturers offered a wide range of methodologies and experiences in the field of landscape research. It is composed by:

The programme included a full day field excursion in the Chianti and a last session of Discussion, chaired by Prof Agnoletti and UNISCAPE Director Prof Pedroli. The guided excursion (with stops in Radda, Lamole, Verrazzano) was organised with the support of CIVILSCAPE and Ministero delle Politiche Agricole, Alimentari e Forestali – Working Group on Landscape.

23 students from all over Europe and from different disciplinary fields had been selected from 37 applications (most of the students that were not accepted lacked a Master’s degree). Two of the participants had already a PhD, but wanted to improve their knowledge in the specific research area. The participation of the students was very active, and the plenary discussions were vivid.
