SUMMARY:International Conference: Paysages en Chemin/s
DESCRIPTION:From paths to paths and from landscapes to landscapes\, the international conference ‘Paysage en chemin/s’ aims to bring together points of view\, experiences and knowledge about landscape\, following the paths of teachers and researchers\, as well as authors and professionals\, who were trained as part of the Diplôme d’études approfondies “Jardins\, paysages\, territoires” (JPT) between 1991 and 2005. It also aims to bring together the points of view of those who have come into contact with the vision of this movement of thought\, developing it\, criticising it\, revising it and\, in so doing\, bringing it to life and helping it to evolve. On the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the DEA JPT\, this conference aims to question the thinking and action undertaken since the 1990s around Landscape as a scientific\, political and operational field and its current role in the context of the contemporary social\, ecological and climatic crisis.

SUMMARY:En- Route Seminar: Bridging the Limits. Borderscapes as continuities and contexts
DESCRIPTION:En-Route International Seminar\nBridging the Limits. Borderscapes as continuities and contexts.\nBucharest and Drobeta Turnu Severin (Romania)\, 23 – 26 May\nOrganised by Ion Mincu University of Architecture and Urban Planning of Bucharest and UNISCAPE. \nwebsite : https://borderscapes.ro/ \nCalled by the Romans “Danubius” (the god of rivers)\, by Napoleon “the king of European rivers”\, and by Nicolae Iorga\, “the richest in gifts”\, the Danube is the most expressive and defining feature of the Southern Romanian borderscape. The river’s sinuous course crosses the landscapes of Europe\, connecting in time and space capitals\, communities and places steeped in history \nThe gorge that the Danube carved at the entrance to the country has assumed\, throughout history\, a strategic role\, while defining a cultural area of exceptional importance\, generating architectural values and a specific way of life. \nReconsidering the existing relationships within the borderscapes adjacent to the river and the pattern of settlement\, and drawing on existing or disappearing landscape landmarks\, the intention of the workshop is to find ideas\, solutions and answers for the conservation and management of the cultural values of this area through a research approach\, started with the workshop Ada Kaleh – The Never Never Island developped at  WAVe – edition 2021\, organised by IUAV\, which later continued with the workshop held in Bucharest at UAUIM\, Ada Kaleh – a Waterscape for the Future\,  in october 2021. An example of this is the enhancing of the potential offered by the sunken island of Ada Kaleh\, still present in the collective memory.  \nA broader aim of the workshop is to create a system of cultural landmarks as key points for a future development strategy for the area\, having in view the the ruins of Trajan bridge connected with the Drobeta Castrum\, ?imian island and the two big natural parks: Djerdap\, on the Serbian side an Iron Gates Natural park\, on the Romanian side of the Danube.  \nThe workshop is adressed to the students of the university members UNISCAPE\, specially to the students involved in the workshop Ada Kaleh – The Never Never Island within W.A.Ve – edition 2021.

SUMMARY:WDM 8_23 Lecture | Knowledge and landscape: Landscapes of Knowledge vs Landscapes of Oblivion | CANCELED
DESCRIPTION:16th November 2023\nCANCELED \n\n\n\nKnowledge and landscape: Landscapes of Knowledge vs Landscapes of Oblivion \nby Ruth VARELA\, Unidad de investigación pARQc\, ETSAC\, Universidade da Coruña \n\n\n\n\nGeneral subject area | landscape theory \nAbstract | As the Greek poet Simonides of Ceos (c. 556-468 BC) empirically discovered\, all our memories are associated with a place; a topos. Only forgeRng is placeless\, or\, in other words\, every memory needs a spa\,al context. In fact\, there are a number of very interes\,ng metaphors that express forgeRng. Thus\, for example\, when memory is presented as a landscape\, the metaphors of forgeRng are related to barren or uncul\,vated land\, wastelands or abandoned wells. But it must be said that our era has become forgeUul\, forgeUul of itself\, forgeUul of memory. And in this forgeUulness\, it has distanced itself from knowledge of the landscape.\nThis paper will offer a theore\,cal framework and a series of examples that will allow us to understand the fact that for many centuries\, and thanks to the development of the techniques of the art of memory\, the prac\,ces of knowledge genera\,on and the prac\,ces of the produc\,on of meaning became\, on more than a few occasions\, landscape prac\,ces. At the same \,me\, landscape prac\,ces became a great laboratory for tes\,ng the most varied prac\,ces of knowledge genera\,on and the produc\,on of meaning. It should be recalled here that the French philosopher Se?bas\,en Marot explains in his work Suburbanism and the Art of Memory that the Ars topiaria “was a great laboratory for the seman\,sa\,on of territory”.\nThe influence of the techniques of the art of memory and the prac7ces of memory on landscape architecture and contemporary crea\,on linked to the landscape will also be discussed. And\, finally\, it will try to show with significant examples that the art of memory\, and the prac7ces of memory\, have been\, and con\,nue to be\, one of the most relevant methodologies in the process of knowing\, understanding and\, also\, projec\,ng the landscape. \n

SUMMARY:WDM 7_23 Lecture | Understanding Preferences for Rural Landscapes
DESCRIPTION:12th October 2023\n17.30 (CET) | REGISTRATION LINK \n\n\n\nUnderstanding Preferences for Rural Landscapes \nby Cathal O’DONOGHUE\, University of Galway\, Paul KILGARRIFF\, Luxembourg Institute of Socio- Economic Research\, and Mary RYAN\, Teagasc \n\n\n\n\n\nGeneral subject area |  Landscape preference modelling \nAbstract | The purpose of this study is to understand public preferences for different landscapes. Our aim was to categorise landscapes in terms of identifiable attributes and to assess the public’s preference for different types of landscape.\nThe first part of this study undertakes a choice experiment\, utilising a survey of landscape preferences. We use a statistical methodology to extract individual preferences for different rural landscapes as defined by images. Using Ireland as a case study\, we conducted a survey consisting of 430 individuals\, asked for their preferences through the use of 50 rural landscape photographs.\nInitial results show that individuals prefer managed agricultural landscapes that contain stonewalls and hedgerows and a negative preference for rough unmanaged landscapes\, industrial peat harvesting and wind turbines. Heterogeneity is also found between urban and rural dwellers. With increasing levels of development and urban expansion\, it is important to preserve not only protected habitats but also landscapes that are highly valued by local residents and society as a whole. In order to protect the latter\, we need to establish what society values and where these areas are located.\nIn this study we decompose landscape photos into individual attributes and quantify the preferences for each attribute. Using this set of environmental attributes\, we use open-source spatial data to present each attribute spatially for the wider landscape. For example\, a high Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) score is used for green pasture\, stonewalls in areas that have limestone bedrock and agriculture present. By only using European-wide data\, the methodology outlined is scalable when combined with a regional choice experiment to reflect local preferences. Ireland is divided into a grid of 400m cells. Each cell is assigned landscape attributes on the basis of the characteristics that can be measured within the grid.\nUtilising our the preference model estimated\, we can generate a public preference (both in terms of the national population and in terms of the local population) for the visible landscape characteristics. Of interest is the different between the public’s view and expert views. We compare in two dimensions\, preferences for landscapes compared with expert based Landscape Character Assessment (LCA) and with the biodiversity potential of the landscape.\nThe results show the areas that are highly valued by individuals do not correspond to the areas that are highly valued in expert-led studies such as the (LCA). In terms of biodiversity\, we find that the public have similar preferences for biodiverse landscapes with experts\, except in the case of peatland. This highlights a potential issue for future planning and environmental policy and a need for improved education in relation to the biodiversity value of peatland. If provision is only made to protect the landscapes valued by environmental experts\, landscapes that are highly valued by society are left unprotected and vulnerable to being damaged or lost. \nRegister in advance for this lecture After registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the lecture on Zoom. SUMMARY:WDM 6_23 Lecture | The role of community benefits in community acceptance of multifunctional solar farms
DESCRIPTION:28th September 2023\n17.30 (CET) | Zoom\n\n\n\nThe role of community benefits in community acceptance of multifunctional solar farms in the Netherlands \n\n\n\nby Kimo VAN DEN BERG\, Department of Environmental Sciences\, Wageningen University \n\n\n\n\nGeneral subject area | Landscape policy and governance\, landscape and community\, land use planning\, productive landscapes\, energy landscapes. \nAbstract | While solar farm developments contribute to sustainable energy goals\, they often have negative impacts on the landscape and face high levels of local opposition. Community benefits are a promising tool to reduce opposition\, as they do in wind farm developments. By adding multiple functions to a solar farm (e.g. nature development\, recreational elements\, food production)\, benefits for the local community – other than sustainable energy production – can be generated. The added functions contribute to other goals\, such as climate change or nature development\, and also visually connect better with their surroundings\, allowing for a better integration with the landscape. As such\, multifunctional solar farms can mitigate the negative impacts on the landscape or even add value to the functioning and appearance of the landscape. However\, also examples exist where community benefits have not managed to reduce levels of opposition. Therefore\, this research aims to understand the role of community benefits in community acceptance of multifunctional solar farm developments through case studies in the Netherlands. The research consists of two phases: an exploratory phase through desk research mapping multifunctional solar farm developments in the Netherlands and an explanatory phase\, analysing why community benefits are implemented and how they affect community acceptance\, done through interviews. The results show that a key factor determining if community benefits contribute to community acceptance is the extent to which these benefits meet the experienced needs of a community. The degree to which solar farm developments succeed in meeting these needs depends on the motives and interest of developers to provide benefits\, the history and context of the location and the level of community involvement. By shaping the type of benefits provided by developers together with the community to meet the local needs\, the landscape intervention is catering to the community’s needs and wishes. \n

SUMMARY:WDM 4_23 Lecture | Improve the landscape through community work
DESCRIPTION:8th June 2023 | 17.30 (CET)\nZoom REGISTRATION LINK \nGuidelines to improve the landscape through community work in neighbourhoods situated on slopes in Quito\, Ecuador \nby Mayte Alejandra CUESTA TABARES\nRespondent: Tayana PASSOS ROSA \n\n\n\nGeneral subject area | Landscape and community \nAbstract | Due to the Ecuadorian social-cultural background\, community work has been always existing under the Kichwa language name of “Minga” which consists of collective work for the betterment of physical space. Ecuadorian people have an immense load of indigenous cultures and features\, one of them is guard the nature and water as the first provider in the settlement. Unfortunately\, this attribute is being lost due to the growth of the city. On one hand\, Quito\, the capital of Ecuador counts with 182 streams\, all polluted by wastewater\, sewage\, and garbage. And on the other\, the high cost of living in the hyper center has led the population to abuse hillside\, ravine land and build settlements that do not meet basic living requirements. Most of these neighborhoods have a high probability of disaster due to earthquakes\, alluvion\, rains\, etc and they are strongly contributing to the degradation of the natural landscape around the ravines. Therefore\, the settlements have polluted the streams and rivers widening the already existing infrastructure gap in the city. \nThe aim is to describe the main characteristics of Minga\, study cases of neighborhoods that have helped to recover landscape through community work in damaged areas\, specifically in slopes or ravines near to rivers in urban areas\, and approach intervention guidelines to develop the landscape situated in slopes in the city of Quito. \nRegister in advance for this lecture After registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the lecture on Zoom. SUMMARY:WDM3_23 Lecture | Landscape principles and design-based learning
DESCRIPTION:18th May 2023\n17.30 (CET) | Zoom | REGISTRATION LINK \n\n\n\nLandscape principles and design-based learning as a pedagogical method for environmental literacy \nby Tayana PASSOS ROSA\, Institute of Landscape Architecture\, Urban Planning and Garden Art\, Department of Landscape Protection and Landscape Rehabilitation\, Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences \nRespodent: Mayte CUESTA\, Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences (MATE) \n\n\n\nGeneral subject area | landscape principles and design-based learning; landscape and community; landscape and education; landscape democracy; participation. \nAbstract | Environmental education\, in its present situation\, is not evolving in accordance with the pressing sustainability needs and the educational needs of the 21st century. It is known\, there is an educational gap between the way these issues are addressed in educational settings and the fast-changing state of the environment. To be up to date with modern needs\, education needs to go beyond passive learning\, it needs to be fun\, engaging\, rooted in real experiences\, and offer forms of interaction and empathy to be truly transformative [1\,2]. \nOne pedagogical methodology growing in popularity in recent years is the Design-Based Learning (DBL)\, a form of teaching that involves applying the design process to the instruction of subjects. Intrinsic to the design process is the use of important skills of the 21st century\, such as communication\, collaboration\, creativity\, and critical thinking\, but it also implies knowing how and being open to dealing with wicked problems\, and such skills are invaluable for today’s challenges [3\,4]. \n\n\n\nCombining the DBL approach to instruct pupils about the planning and maintenance of spaces has the potential to spark a stronger sense of identity with the local landscape that leads to better care and maintenance of environments. Such programs should be rooted in actively redesigning and rebuilding environments by students. This can be achieved by integrating landscape architecture principles into the DBL curriculum\, to have programs that hands-on create aesthetically pleasing and sustainable environments within learning spaces. Students should consider users’ needs and wishes\, while learning strategies on how to create landscapes that maintain the dynamics of environmental change and have a rehabilitating effect. This method promotes experiences that build personal connections with the landscape\, and beyond the learnings from the process\, the products of such programs can continuously be used for educational purposes [5\,6]. \nRegister in advance for this lecture After registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the lecture on Zoom. SUMMARY:WDM 2_23 Lecture | Planetarity: Landscapes of Double Consciousness
DESCRIPTION:13th April 2023\n17.30 (CET) | Zoom REGISTRATION LINK \n\n\n\nPlanetarity: Landscapes of Double Consciousness\nby Tim WATERMAN\, Bartlett School of Architecture\, University College London\nRespondent: Ed WALL\, University of Greenwich\n\nGeneral subject area | landscape architecture; landscape theory; landscape heritage; landscape ecology; landscape democracy; consciousness; future and planetary imaginaries \n\n\n\n\nAbstract | In 1903 W.E.B. Du Bois elaborated the idea of double consciousness in his The Souls of Black Folk. Black Americans\, he argued\, were forced to see the world and themselves through the eyes of a white supremacist society. The idea of double consciousness has since been enriched by queer theory\, feminism\, gender studies\, and more\, with ‘triple consciousness’ and other framings added to and enlarging Dubois’s original theory. In this paper we argue that landscapes are likewise perceived and experienced in their plurality\, through double\, triple\, multiple consciousness. Landscapes are the scenography of earthly power and financial might\, but also the dialogic milieu of everyday lives. These are in conflict\, but also result in hybrid formations as well as contestation and resistance. All landscapes in the world now express this multiplicity\, whether as the result of settler colonialism\, or the ways in which the same forces of imperialism transformed (and continue to transform) lives and landscapes at colonialism’s centre. In this paper we map two particular poles of understanding\, landscapes of globality and planetarity. We explore globality as cartographic\, imperial\, and employing the language of colonialism\, plantation\, emparkment\, and enclosure. In contrast we argue that planetarity is more dialogic\, relational\, and expressed in commonality\, sharing\, care\, and management. While we recognise these two faces of landscape are in conflict\, we contend that they also exist simultaneously in the same landscapes\, often sharing the same consciousness\, looking out through the same eye sockets. Understanding this not just as a duality\, but as a trialectic enfolding hybrids and mutations\, becomes a tool for working and thinking with all landscapes more effectively. \nRegister in advance for this lecture After registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the lecture on Zoom. SUMMARY:WDM 1_23 Lecture | Moving Horizons. A landscape manifesto
DESCRIPTION:23th March 2023\n17.30 (CET) | ZOOM | REGISTRATION LINK \nMoving Horizons\, design praxis through soil transformation. A Landscape Manifesto\nby Vittoria MENCARINI\, Ph.D\, University of Ferrara; Ravenna Public Administration\, Natural Area Office \nRespondent: Margherita VANORE\, Univerisità IUAV Venezia \nGeneral subject Area | landscape architecture; landscape theory; landscape observatory; landscape ecology \nAbstract | Moving horizon was born as a doctoral investigation that moves across research and design dimension. It explores the relationship between landscape design and soil transformation\, focusing on the mutual effects and potential disciplinary developments aiming at structurally linking the two fields. \nThe soil is one of the most complex biomaterials on Earth in continuous exchange with the terrestrial systems. With humanity today being Earth’s primary geomorphic agent\, the quality of human life and the earth’s environment had never depended more on soil management than it does today.\nThe starting assumption is that\, the soil is a condition of inherent shifting in landscape evolution both in physical and semantic relationship. \nThe value of soil as an element of planning and design lies in handling live and dynamic physical matter. From being ‘background’ for the built environment\, the soil transformations become the ‘foreground’ both in landscape design praxis and in theoretical implications\, by embedding the soil as a palimpsest in reading and writing the landscape. The framework produced by this assessment has been condensed in 10 propositions\, collected in form of a Landscape Manifesto. A first application of Moving Horizon approach has been developed and tested in the Ravenna Climate Change Adaptation Plan (Italy)\, by identifying a planning procedure capable of integrating territorial adaptation measures to climate change. \nThe result is not the proof of a theorem but the discovery of an unexpected point of view. The Moving Horizon approach implicitly criticises traditional landscape practice’s seemingly uncritical reproduction of stereotypical ‘aestheticised’ images. It is not a question of rejecting or abandoning a formal and compositional language\, but rather of encouraging a view that favours investigation and observation of reality in its different stratifications offered by embedding the soil as a palimpsest in “reading” and “writing” the landscape. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister in advance for this lecture \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the lecture on Zoom.
